Perth Sports Basketball

There are many Perth Sports available to play for professional or recreational purposes in Perth, Australia. Basketball is just one of the many sporting contests that you and your friends can play in the capital city of Western Australia.

Perth sports such as Basketball provide many different levels of competition for you, your friends or your children to play either for fun socially or competitively in one of the many different levels of association run competitions.

Your child can play Perth Sports including basketball against other children their own age in a local area competition or play against other children of similar age from other schools.

There are also many YMCA’s and indoor sporting centres, which provide an opportunity for you to play Perth Sports like basketball socially but at a slightly competitive level.

If you have talent then you can obviously work your way through the state league level and maybe one day play for the Perth Wildcats in the National Basketball League.

The Perth Wildcats are one of the most successful basketball teams in Australian basketball history after winning four championships over the 24 years that they have represented the state in the national league.

The Wildcats were formed in 1982 as the Westate Wildcats and were captained by former coach Mike Ellis in their first season. The Wildcats played at Perry Lakes Stadium and didn’t make much of an impact on the league in their first two seasons before a name change saw the team reborn as the Perth Wildcats.

The arrival of Cal Bruton and James Crawford saw the Wildcats reach their first NBL Basketball Grand Final when making their first playoff appearance.

In 1990 the Wildcats again moved, this time to the Perth Entertainment Centre. Coach Alan Black was fired just two games into the campaign but the Wildcats still managed to claim their first NBL title with victory over the Brisbane Bullets on their own home court.

Basketball is played all around the world with different levels of the game having slightly different rules in relation to the shot clock, the three point line and the halves or quarters that you play shooting at each end.

The NBA 3-point line is further back than the majority of the leagues around the world while in college and high school basketball they generally play two halves while in professional sports the game is played over four twelve minute quarters.

Just like in a half the team keeps shooting for the same basket until the second half when they shoot at the basket at the other end of the floor. Unlike in AFL Football when your teams changes the goals they are kicking too with each quarter time break.

Women’s basketball continues to grow in popularity with the Perth Lynx competing in the Women’s National Basketball League. The Perth Lynx was formed in 1988 as the Perth Breakers. They managed to play in the finals for six straight seasons winning their first and only championship in 1992.
